Where & How Do Appointments Take Place
-
Telehealth
Telehealth offers the flexibility to participate in appointments from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easier to schedule appointments around other commitments. It allows individuals to receive support from the comfort of their home or another preferred location, saving on travel costs and time, while still benefiting from direct, personalised therapy.
-
Home
Appointments at home provide a familiar, comfortable environment for the individual. Parents or caregivers can easily observe the therapy and practice strategies in a natural setting, reinforcing the speech pathologist's recommendations in real-time. This allows for seamless integration of therapy into daily routines, supporting consistent progress.
-
School
Therapy in the school setting allows the speech pathologist to collaborate directly with teachers and other school staff. This integration aims to align communication strategies with academic goals. It also provides an opportunity to observe the child/teen in a structured environment, helping to create effective and personalised strategies for success within the classroom.
-
Community
Appointments in community settings (e.g., cafes, libraries, day support centers (Bedford) shops, etc) provide an opportunity for individual to practice real-life communication skills in natural environments. For example, an individual might practice ordering food at a café or write a shopping list and then go to a store to purchase the items. These settings can encourage individuals to apply their skills in practical, everyday situations.
How Can Appointments Take Place
-
1:1
One-to-one sessions with the speech pathologist offer a focused, supportive environment where the individual receives immediate feedback and guidance to improve skills. This setting provides a comfortable, safe space to work on goals and helps reduce self-consciousness.
-
2:1
In a 2:1 session, the individual works with the speech pathologist alongside a support person (e.g., parent, caregiver, support worker, SSO, etc). This collaborative approach enables the support person to learn and apply strategies in real-time, ensuring that support continues outside of formal therapy sessions.
-
Caregiver Training (with or without individual)
Caregiver training sessions provide essential support for parents or other caregivers (SSOs, support workers, etc), teaching them how to implement communication strategies in their interactions with the individual. These sessions can be conducted with or without the individual, depending on the focus and needs of the caregiver and individual.
FAQs
About the Service Locations:
-
Yes, you can request a specific community location for your appointments, as long as the location meets the needs of the appointment and is accessible. The speech pathologist will work with you to determine the most suitable and comfortable environment based on your goals and preferences.
About the Type of Appointments:
-
Yes, family members, caregivers, support workers and SSOs are welcome to attend telehealth sessions. In fact, their involvement can be crucial in supporting the individual’s communication development, as the support person can learn the strategies and receive real-time guidance to apply in daily life.
-
Most speech pathology goals can be addressed effectively over telehealth, though the format may differ. Individuals may need assistance with technology, and non-verbal participants will require a support person to help implement communication strategies. Activities and assessments can still be completed remotely, with the speech pathologist using interactive and online versions of assessments and games to make appointments fun and engaging.
About the Service Delivery:
-
Yes, we can offer a combination of telehealth and face-to-face services to meet your needs. This flexibility ensures that you can receive ongoing support at a higher frequency, even if face-to-face sessions are limited due to geographical or scheduling constraints.
-
Yes, you can start with telehealth appointments and transition to face-to-face appointments when a spot becomes available in your area. This allows you to begin receiving support sooner while keeping the option open to move to in-person appointments as your needs or preferences change.
-
In telehealth appointments the speech pathologist will guide and teach the support person (e.g., parent, caregiver, support worker, etc) on strategies to use with the non-speaking/non-verbal person. The focus will be on supporting the individual’s communication needs through educating their caregiver, who can practice the strategies during the appointment with the individual, and also apply them outside of appointment, to support consistent progress outside of appointments.
